South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ boasts marvellous scenery, stunning beaches and colourful history. It is, in my opinion, one of the country’s greatest treasures. If you are wanting to get a good taster of what this city offers then I recommend at least 4 days, but a week would definitely be ideal.
Day One
Wander through the colourful Bo Kaap, learn about Apartheid history at the District Six museum and go on a local Township tour to see some of the effects that apartheid had. I DO NOT recommend visiting these townships on the outskirts of the city on your own… it is best (and more safe) to go on a guided tour.
The wonderful thing I found was that most of the locals were welcoming and loved seeing people visit their towns. Many of kids came out to play with us and some of the locals will show your around in their homes. Go with an open heart and open mind, these people don’t have much and many have even built their own homes with whatever materials they could source. That being said, crime can still be serious here, especially towards non-locals, so go with a guide.
Day Two
Catch the bus around to the base of Table Mountain and hike up to the top for stunning views of the city and the Atlantic coast. (link to other post). Catch the Cable car down and then head over the the Old Biscuit Mill for Lunch.
Spend the afternoon at Muizenberg Beach to get the perfect insta-worthy shot of all the colourful beach houses.
Day Three
Sunrise Hike up Lions Head. Hang by the Beach (or even take a lesson and surf one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world).
Take the 3pm Ferry (prior booking essential) to Robben Island and see the prison cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his life.
Dinner at Mama Africa on Long Street. Try a bit of game meat and get amongst the vibes with the perfect combination of African music and food.
Day Four
Shark Cage Diving (this is an early start as you have to drive 2.5 hours south from Cape Town and start diving just after dawn). In the afternoon head over to Boulders Beach to see the gorgeous little penguins #cutenessoverload
If time allows:
Day Five
Head out to Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens and immerse yourself in the lush greenery and biodiversity of the flora and fauna. If your budget allows splurge on a helicopter flight and see the city from all new angles π
Day Six
Tour of Woodstock street art and then kick back at the beach around Clifton, Camps Bay or Sea Point.
Indulge in a spot of shopping or even treat yourself to a fancy dinner at the Victoria and Albert ( V & A) Waterfront.
Day Seven
Spend the night out in the beautiful ‘Winelands’ region either in Franschhoek or Stellenbosch soaking up a bit of secluded romantic luxury and gourmet farm to table food.
Cape Town is by far one of my FAVOURITE cities and is the perfect place to begin or end your African adventure. It has such a wide range of experiences for history enthusiasts, outdoor lovers, beach goers and foodies. I’m already planning my next trip back! π
